From 2008 to 2010, the first cohort of the Sager Science Leadership Institute, a group of 35 monks from 5 different monasteries, was trained and worked together in mutually supportive learning groups to share science with other monastics and continue science learning within the group. These leaders were able to:
- Organize science exhibitions for local lay and monastic communities
- Use their knowledge of science, and science education materials, to assemble science lessons appropriate for different audiences
- Teach short science classes and courses to other monks
- Organize "Science and Buddhism" dialogues for local schools
- Write articles on science, science education, and "science and Buddhism" for publication in local science journals and newsletters
- Continue to advance their own knowledge by working together on topics of common interest and by completing assignments: reading, video, and activities provide by through the program
