Investigation of Monastic Debate at the Sera Jey Science Center

Tibetan monasteries and nunneries have a rich tradition of debate and many monastics spend several hour each day in intensive debates that inquire into Buddhist philosophical positions. Monastic debate is recognized for educational effectiveness as well deeper qualities it fosters within individuals. A team of nine monastics at Sera Jey are collaborating with psychologists and neuroscientists to implement a study of the cognitive and clinical psychological qualities of monastic debate, including emotional regulation, logical reasoning, attention, and memory.
